The downward spiral began when some milk splashed up onto the mixer while I was using it. The digital display started blinking and going nuts; it changed speed on its own and then completely stopped working. I'd expect more from a mixer--of course stuff is going to splash around it when it's on. A day later, I tried using it and it did turn on, but would only go to speed 9 and then shut off. When I contacted KitchenAid, they said it was out of warranty and did offer me a 30% off discount on replacing it, but I am going to pass. When I spend nearly 0 on a mixer, I want it to last more than a year and a half. And investing another to replace it really just doesn't make more sense. The variable speed controls are very easy to use and allow you to get just the right speed for the job. Cleans up easily.
