This review is from: Maytag Performance Series MHWE450WW 27 4.5 cu. Ft. Front-Load Washer - White
We have always owned Maytag washers and dryers. When we decided to replace our old set with a newer more energy efficient model that could handle larger loads (we have 3 teenagers), we went for the product we trusted. Within a year, the drum and bearing had to be replaced, because they were rusted and making a horrible noise. A month later the machine sounds horrible again(like a freight train, so loud you can't even hear the TV). We bought the machine from H H Gregg. They had the wrong purchase date on file, good thing we had our paper work to prove it should still be under warranty. We received poor customer service from H H Gregg and Maytag when we tried to get the washer repaired. We were on hold for long periods, treated as if we had some type of "user error" problem, and given incorrect information about when the repair guy would come fix the machine. We bought the washer in January of 2010, and we are replacing it in February of 2011. It won't be a Maytag and it won't be from H H Gregg!
What ever happened to the Maytag washer that you knew would last you 20 years and then you pass it on to your kid for their first apartment?

We brought a Maytag 4.5 cubic foot performance series front loader in September 2010 for just under 0.00 (MHWE400WW). Family of 6. By June 19, 2011, the machine was leaking and on June 22nd we were informed that it needed a major overall (retail parts ,700) and 2 man 3 hour labor costs (all for a machine that retailed for 0). [A&E Factor service man - told me that these front loaders all tend to fail between 1 and 2 years, and that we were lucky it failed during the warranty period - the bearings are defective on the machines and as they fail the machine falls apart with each spinning cycle. He said he would not buy a front loader because of all of the problems he was fixed with these machines.] While its still under warranty, as of July 18th, we are still waiting for parts (5 weeks now). The 2 0.00 parts we have been waiting for are made in Germany and have been on container ships somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean). While the last of the 8 parts is supposedly due to arrive at my house tomorrow by 4:30 p.m. (a full five weeks after been requested), A&E Factory service can't service it until a week from now. Maytag's stance is repair only. There is no warranty for a timely repair, adjustment to the warranty time period for downtime, or reimbursement for laundromat cost. Maytag and A&E do not coordinate. While Maytag will supposedly forward a request for a performance review (i.e., get a replacement machine if no parts available within 10 days of their decision to expediate a parts request); they didn't abide by this 'policy' even though I was told by two Maytage supervisors that our claim had been forwarded to Maytag's Performance Review office. I will never buy another front loader or a machine from Maytag. I doubt this machine will last as long as my prior machines which had an average life of 7+ years. Good Riddance.

We bought this in Oct 2010 to replace our Neptune that we had for 12 years. It started making lots of noise by April 2011. We are now visiting the local laundromat until further notice. Repair guy said our washer needs a new wash drum assembly and bearing and we have to wait two weeks for the parts. This lack of part is consistent with severe and recurrent failure of a single part leading to a shortage of replacement. I raised this issue with Maytag and they claim that they only have a 5% failure rate. But 3 out of 4 users here report the same failure. The 4 person is only 2 months in. I wonder if they'll experience the same problem. Bottom line, do not buy this one or any other front load from Maytag since they are using the same parts across model series. The differences are the features and the accessories. To fail this badly at making the wash drum is to neglect the most basic design and engineering principle of manufacturing, one does not skim on primary mechanical components. Maytag did and we as consumers are paying for it.
